Chile is at the forefront of Latin America as regards the “digital economy”, according to the latest version of an annual study prepared by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) of the prestigious The Economist magazine and the IBM Institute for Business Value. For the second consecutive year, Chile took 30th place in the international ranking, although its score dropped slightly to 6.39 points, down from 6.49 in 2009.

The Digital Economy Rankings 2010 measures variables in six categories: connectivity and technology infrastructure, business environment, social and cultural environment, legal environment, government policy and vision, and consumer and business adoption.

Chile achieved its best score - 8 points out of a maximum of 10 - on business environment, followed by legal environment (7.4). It weakest performance was on connectivity and technology infrastructure (4.15) but it, nonetheless, led Latin America on all six categories. The first five places in the ranking, which has been published since 2000, went to Sweden (which took second place in 2009), Denmark (first place in 2009), the United States, Finland and Holland.

In addition to the six categories mentioned above, the ranking also takes into account indicators that include the quality of broadband and mobile services, the cost of Internet access and its penetration.
